Food shopping in the Nebbio: the bread, the fish, the vegetables

The wood-fired bread you collect at 10.30am, the fish from the gulf landed that morning, the organic farm in Oletta. Where I buy what I eat, and what time you need to be there.

A house with two ovens, a plancha and a long table outside is wasted if you eat out every night. Here is where I buy what I cook, and every address is under a quarter of an hour away.

The bread, in Patrimonio

Jean-François Maestracci, the Libertalia man, bakes his bread in a wood-fired oven. It is simply one of the best in the region. You collect it at the Brasserie Ribella, on the road to Saint-Florent, around 10.30am, in limited quantities. Turn up on time.

The fish, in Saint-Florent

Ève and Simon, at the Poissonnerie du Golfe, are where we buy fish. Caught in the gulf and around Cap Corse, landed daily. Come early for the best choice. For cooking at home, there is nothing better.

The vegetables, in Oletta

Le Potager du Nebbio is an organic farm in Oletta, fifteen minutes away. Vegetables, fruit, eggs and olive oil of the day, depending on what has been picked. You can also have lunch under the olive trees, simple food made from what comes out of the ground. Booking required for lunch, and cash only.

The rest, on place Doria

Épicerie Scoto, on place Doria in Saint-Florent, for Corsican products: charcuterie, cheeses, honeys, jams, island wines. That is where you fill the table, and where you find what you take home.

For a big shop when you arrive, the Leclerc in Oletta is fifteen minutes away, directly opposite the Potager du Nebbio. Do both in one trip: the industrial one on one side of the road, the good one on the other.

The questions I get asked about this

Is there a market in Saint-Florent?

Yes, in the morning, with cheeses, charcuterie and vegetables, and the fishmonger right next door. For Corsican products to take home, Épicerie Scoto on place Doria is open all year.

Where can I buy fresh fish near Saint-Florent?

At the Poissonnerie du Golfe, route Entrée Nord in Saint-Florent, run by Ève and Simon. Caught in the gulf and around Cap Corse, landed daily. Come early for the best choice.

Is there a supermarket near Barbaggio?

The Leclerc in Oletta is fifteen minutes away, and Bastia with everything you need is twenty-five. For day to day shopping, Saint-Florent is under ten minutes.

Does the house have a vegetable garden?

Yes, behind the house: courgettes, tomatoes, chillies, watermelons depending on the season. Help yourself, that is what it is there for.

Is the kitchen well equipped for six people?

It is built for cooking together: steam oven and conventional oven, Jura whole bean coffee machine, juicer, ice cream maker, dishwasher, freezer. A long table inside, a long table outside, a plancha and a barbecue.

The house

All of this is less than twenty minutes from Baraccò Argia

A rebuilt shepherd’s house of 145 m² in the Patrimonio vines, three bedrooms each with a bathroom, an eleven-metre heated pool, and nobody around.
